As part of the oversight committee set up to investigate the allegations made against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Babita Phogat, a former wrestler, was appointed to serve. Additionally, the Oversight Committee is investigating allegations of sexual misbehaviour, harassment, intimidation, as well as financial and organizational irregularities that have been made by famous athletes in the past few years.
As a result of the emergency meeting of the IOA’s Executive Council earlier this month, a committee was established. It was also attended by IOA’s President PT Usha, joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey, and other people such as Yogeshwar and Abhinav Bindra.
Babita Phogat is the sixth member of the Oversight Committee, which is chaired by MC Mary Kom, Chairperson of the Athletes Commission and Khel Ratna Award laureate. Yogeshwar Dutt, a Khel Ratna Awardee, serves on the IOA’s executive council. Trupti Murgunde is a member of the Mission Olympic Cell and a Dhyanchand Awardee. Radhica Sreeman is a former Sports Authority of India executive director of TEAMS.
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced earlier this month the creation of a committee to probe the accusations against the WFI chairman as well as handle the sports body’s day-to-day operations.
The spat between the agitated grapplers and the WFI came to an end after the athletes called off their protest after receiving promises from the administration.
However, Bajrang, Vinesh, Sarita Mor, and Sakshi, who staged a three-day sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar seeking the removal of the WFI president, expressed dismay that they were not contacted before the committee was formed.
