The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across various regions in India over the next four to five days. The states expected to be affected include those in east, northeast, and east central India. Concurrently, the recent heavy rains in Telangana have caused significant damage, prompting an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to visit the state on Monday for damage assessment. Led by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) advisor Kunal Satyarthi, the team comprises representatives from multiple ministries and departments, including agriculture, finance, jal shakti, power, road transport, highways, and the national remote sensing centre (NRSC).
In northwest India, light to moderate rain with isolated heavy rainfall is expected in east Uttar Pradesh until August 3 and in east Rajasthan on July 31 and August 2. Uttarakhand is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall between August 1 and 3, while west Uttar Pradesh might experience showers on August 1 and 2. Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, and Delhi are other regions in north India likely to receive rainfall on August 2 and 3. Central India is also bracing for rainfall, with light to moderate rainfall and isolated heavy rainfall predicted in east Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh during the next five days. Northwest Madhya Pradesh is expected to receive showers on August 30, while isolated very heavy rainfall is forecasted in east Madhya Pradesh on August 2.
Moving to east India, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall until August 3. Some parts of West Bengal may also witness downpours until August 2. Meanwhile, in the northeast, a fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is very likely during the next five days. Arunachal Pradesh is expected to experience isolated very heavy rainfall on August 2, while Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may encounter heavy rains from August 1 to 3. In west India, rainfall is anticipated to continue over Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra during the next five days. South India is also not exempt from the forecast, with light to moderate rainfall and isolated heavy rainfall expected in Telangana on August 1, and coastal Karnataka on August 2 and 03.
The recent heavy rains in Telangana have led to the inundation of low-lying areas and damage to agricultural fields in several places in the state. The Met Centre has warned of heavy rain in isolated areas of Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Mahabubabad districts of Telangana from 8.30 am on August 1 to 8.30 am on August 2. With these forecasts in place, authorities and residents across India are urged to take necessary precautions and preparedness measures to mitigate potential damages and disruptions caused by the heavy rainfall and floods.
