In a bid to enhance the travel experience for passengers in general-class coaches, the Indian Railways has undertaken a remarkable initiative to provide food at pocket-friendly prices. The railway board’s decision to offer economical meals priced at just ₹20, along with snacks at ₹50, aims to cater to the needs of budget-conscious travelers while ensuring they can enjoy a variety of delectable options. Under this ambitious plan, extended service counters have been set up on platforms adjacent to general-class coaches, facilitating easy access to affordable and appetizing meals.

The menu boasts an array of culinary delights, carefully curated to include both South and North Indian specialties. From the delectable aaloo-pooris and mouthwatering masala dosa to comforting khichdi and tempting chole kulche/bhature, passengers can now savor an assortment of regional delicacies during their train journeys. This thoughtful approach by the Indian Railways not only promotes inclusivity but also offers a taste of the rich diversity that the country has to offer. In addition to the budget meals, the railway board has also made provisions for reasonably priced packaged drinking water, ensuring that travelers can stay hydrated without straining their wallets. This move aligns with the Railways’ commitment to providing essential amenities at affordable rates.

The introduction of extended service counters is currently on an experimental basis for a duration of six months. Already operational at 51 stations, the services will soon be extended to 13 more, allowing a broader section of passengers to avail themselves of these cost-effective food options. The initiative is expected to receive feedback from travelers during this period, enabling further improvements and refinement.

Addressing the needs of lower-income groups, especially manual laborers, the Indian Railways is set to launch a series of special trains. These trains will feature both sleeper and general-class coaches, accommodating the varied requirements of passengers from different socio-economic backgrounds. With 22 to 26 coaches, these special trains will provide ample space and accommodation options, ensuring a comfortable and affordable journey for those who depend on railways for their travel needs.

This groundbreaking initiative by the Indian Railways exemplifies the organization’s commitment to serving all sections of society and fostering an inclusive travel experience. By offering economic meals, snacks, and reasonably priced packaged drinking water, the Railways is not only catering to passengers’ basic needs but also uplifting their overall journey experience. As the extended service counters continue to roll out to more stations, and the special trains cater to the specific needs of lower-income groups, the railways are undoubtedly on track to create a more equitable and delightful travel ecosystem for all.
