In a bid to optimize the utilization of accommodation in trains, the Ministry of Railways has directed its zones to introduce a discounted fare scheme for air-conditioned (AC) trains with sitting accommodation that experienced below 50 percent occupancy over the past 30 days. This decision aims to incentivize passengers to choose these trains and make travel more affordable. The scheme, effective immediately, will be implemented by the zonal railways, who have been delegated the powers to introduce such measures. The discounted fare scheme will be applicable exclusively to AC Chair Car and Executive classes across all trains featuring AC sitting accommodation, including the esteemed Anubhuti and Vistadome coaches.

Passengers booking tickets on these trains, which had occupancy rates below 50 percent, may avail themselves of a maximum discount of 25 percent on the base fare. However, it’s important to note that this discount will not apply to charges such as reservation charges, Superfast surcharges, and GST, which will be levied separately. This novel scheme goes beyond benefiting passengers on end-to-end journeys; it extends to intermediate sections as well, as long as the occupancy in those sections remains below 50 percent. The discounted fare may be offered for various durations, such as part duration, month-wise, seasonal, or on specific weekdays or weekends, depending on the demand patterns observed during the scheme’s maximum duration of six months.

The Ministry of Railways has emphasized that the scheme will be subject to regular reviews and may be modified, extended, or withdrawn based on the occupancy levels observed. For trains operating under the flexi fare scheme, the railways will first withdraw the flexi scheme from classes experiencing low occupancy. Only if this withdrawal fails to improve occupancy rates, the discounted fare scheme will be implemented for those particular classes. However, it is worth noting that this scheme will not apply to special trains introduced specifically for holidays or festivals. Passengers who have already booked their tickets prior to the implementation of the discounted fare scheme will not be eligible for any refunds.

Therefore, it is advisable for travelers to carefully consider the availability of discounted fares before making their bookings. This initiative by the Ministry of Railways showcases their commitment to passenger satisfaction by introducing measures that enhance affordability and increase occupancy in underutilized AC trains. By granting zonal railways the authority to implement and regulate the scheme, the ministry ensures a more efficient and tailored approach to optimizing the utilization of accommodation. With the introduction of this discounted fare scheme, passengers can now enjoy more affordable travel options on selected AC trains, contributing to a positive travel experience for all.
