WhatsApp is reportedly working on an update that will allow users to create unique usernames, providing an additional layer of privacy and reducing the need to share phone numbers. The feature, still in development and expected to take months before widespread availability, aims to offer a more memorable and secure way for users to connect with others on the messaging platform. By enabling usernames, WhatsApp will enable users to add contacts without revealing their registered mobile numbers, while still ensuring that conversations remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
The forthcoming username feature, as discovered by WhatsApp updates tracker WABetaInfo, is expected to appear in the Profile section of the app’s settings. The exact functionality remains unclear, as even beta users do not currently have access to the feature. However, it is likely that WhatsApp will follow the footsteps of other social media platforms and messaging apps, such as Signal, by providing users with the option to choose a unique username for their accounts.
The introduction of usernames on WhatsApp comes at a time when users globally, particularly in India, have been experiencing an influx of spam calls and messages. Although usernames could offer an added level of security, it is important to note that determined bad actors may still find ways to exploit the system. Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have long relied on usernames for logins, yet users continue to receive suspicious messages and calls. Therefore, while the username feature may offer temporary respite from spam calls, it is crucial to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting personal information.
WhatsApp, as well as its parent company Meta, has not officially confirmed the implementation of the username feature. Nonetheless, WhatsApp has been actively introducing new features to its users, particularly in India. Recent additions include multi-device connectivity, allowing users to access WhatsApp on multiple phones, and a Lock Chat feature to safeguard selected conversations. Additionally, the platform now offers an Edit Message option, enabling users to correct typos within 15 minutes of sending a text.
