But behind that 5-digit number lies a lot more information. This number not only tells you where you are going and where you are coming from, but also the status of the train and its progress.

It is surprising that so much information is hidden in just 5 digits. But this is true. Actually every train has a unique number. That number identifies it. These numbers can range from 0 to 9. For example 0 means this train is special train. (Belonging to summer special, holiday special or other special category)
What do the numbers 1 to 4 mean?

If the first digit is 1 or 2 it means that the train is going far. This train may be Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Jan Sadhar, Sampark Kranti, Garib Rath, Durham. Also if the first digit is 3 it means that this train is Kolkata Sub Urban Train. And if the first digit is 4, it means the suburban train of New Delhi, Chennai, Secunderabad and other metro cities.

Meaning of numbers 5 to 9

If the first digit is 5 then it is a passenger train. If the first digit is 6 then it is MEMU train. If the first digit is 7 then it is DEMU train. If first digit is 8 then it is reserve train. If the first digit is 9 then it is Mumbai Sub Urban Train. If the first letter of the train starts with 0, 1, 2 then the remaining four letters indicate the railway zone, division.

0- Konkan Railway

1- Central Railway, West Central Railway, North Central Railway

2- Superfast, Shatabdi, Jana Shatabdi. The next digits of these trains indicate the zone code

3- East Railway, East Central Railway
4- Northern Railway, North Central Railway, North Western Railway

5- National Eastern Railway, North Eastern Frontier Railway

6- Southern Railway, South Western Railway

7- South Central Railway, South Western Railway

8- South Eastern Railway, East Coastal Railway

9- Western Railway, North Western Railway, West Central Railway

Not only these.. If the first digit on the train ticket is any of 5, 6, 7.. it means that the second digit indicates the zone and the remaining digits indicate the division code.
