Do you travel by train often? But this news is for you. Have you ever noticed the 5 digit number on the train ticket..! Ha.. yes train number is not.. they think. But behind that 5-digit number lies a lot more information. This number not only tells you where you are going and where you are coming from, but also the status of the train and its progress.

It is surprising that so much information is hidden in just 5 digits. But this is true. Actually every train has a unique number. That number identifies it. These numbers can range from 0 to 9. For example 0 means this train is special train. (Belonging to summer special, holiday special or other special category)
What do the numbers 1 to 4 mean?

If the first digit is 1 or 2 it means that the train is going far. This train may be Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Jan Sadhar, Sampark Kranti, Garib Rath, Durham. Also if the first digit is 3 it means that this train is Kolkata Sub Urban Train. And if the first digit is 4, it means the suburban train of New Delhi, Chennai, Secunderabad and other metro cities.

Meaning of numbers 5 to 9

If the first digit is 5 then it is a passenger train. If the first digit is 6 then it is MEMU train. If the first digit is 7 then it is DEMU train. If first digit is 8 then it is reserve train. If the first digit is 9 then it is Mumbai Sub Urban Train. If the first letter of the train starts with 0, 1, 2 then the remaining four letters indicate the railway zone, division.
