The Indian Army undertook a successful rescue operation on Friday, saving 500 tourists who were stranded at Chungthang in Sikkim while en route to Lachung and Lachen valley. Heavy rainfall in the areas of gen A Lachen, Lachung, and Chungthang had caused landslides and road blocks, leaving the tourists in a precarious situation. Responding to a request from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Chungthang, troops from the Trishakti Corps, Indian Army swiftly swung into action to ensure the safe evacuation of the stranded individuals.
The rescued tourists, comprising 216 men, 113 women, and 54 children, were transported to three different Army camps, where they were provided with hot meals and warm clothing. The soldiers generously vacated their barracks to accommodate the tourists for the night, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring the well-being of those in need. Three medical teams were also formed to assess the health condition of the tourists. One woman, who had visited Gurudogmar Lake earlier in the day, experienced a severe headache and dizziness. A medical team, including a female medical officer from a nearby field hospital, promptly reached the location and identified symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). The woman received immediate medical attention and was subsequently transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) at a medical hospital. By morning, her condition had stabilized.
The swift response and actions of the Indian Army averted any potential mishaps and provided much-needed comfort to the stranded tourists. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to clear the road for vehicular movement as quickly as possible. The tourists will continue to receive assistance until the route is deemed safe for their onward journey.
