Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has called for an urgent Cabinet meeting with Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to discuss the alarming law and order situation in the national capital, following a series of recent murders. In a strongly worded letter to Saxena, Kejriwal expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of safety and security in Delhi and emphasized the need for immediate and effective measures to restore the faith of the city’s residents.

The Delhi Police, which operates under the control of the Union Home Ministry, is responsible for law enforcement in the capital. Kejriwal pointed out that the repeated occurrence of heinous crimes has severely eroded public confidence and demanded swift action to fulfill the obligations of those entrusted with maintaining law and order. Referring to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report released last year, the Chief Minister highlighted that Delhi alone accounted for a staggering 32.20% of crimes against women in 19 cities. He lamented the lack of progress in implementing urgent preventive measures to address crimes against women, despite the alarming statistics.

Kejriwal stressed the need for enhanced police patrolling during nighttime hours and called for engagement with Delhi residents to address the pressing issue of law and order. The request for the Cabinet meeting comes shortly after the tragic incident in RK Puram’s Ambedkar Basti, where two sisters, Pinky and Jyoti, were shot dead while reportedly trying to prevent the kidnapping of their brother Lalit. Police stated that the assailants sought revenge after Lalit allegedly confronted one of them, Dev, the previous night for failing to repay a loan of ₹10,000. Kejriwal criticized the shortage of Delhi Police personnel on the ground, which has forced residents to employ private guards in large numbers to safeguard their lives and properties.

He expressed his disappointment, stating that decision-makers responsible for maintaining law and order in Delhi have displayed a lack of urgency in preventing crimes. In light of these concerns and the urgent need to address the deteriorating law and order situation, the Delhi Chief Minister has called for the proposed Cabinet meeting. The meeting aims to strategize and implement effective measures that will not only combat the rising crime rates but also restore the confidence and trust of Delhi’s residents in their safety and security.
