Education Ministry Urges Schools to Introduce Millet-Based Dishes and Promote Awareness during the International Year of Millets

The Ministry of Education in India has issued a reminder to all states and union territories to introduce millet-based dishes in school canteens and develop a calendar of activities to raise awareness about the health benefits of these coarse cereals during the ongoing International Year of Millets. In a statement released on July 5, the ministry expressed concern that the requested information regarding the planned activities is still pending. In April, the ministry had written to all states and union territories, urging them to share a month-wise calendar of activities aimed at promoting millets. However, despite repeated requests, some states have not yet informed the ministry about their efforts to make the millet year a success.

To address this, the ministry has once again requested states to submit the details promptly. India played a significant role in declaring 2023 as the International Year of Millets through the United Nations. Since then, the country has been committed to popularizing these coarse grains, which are not only rich in micronutrients but also resilient to adverse growing conditions. In addition to adopting millet-based recipes in school and office canteens, the ministry has recommended that states follow a millet-based recipe book prepared by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.

Furthermore, last year, the ministry had already instructed all states to include millets in the free midday meal menus provided to students in government and government-aided schools up to class 8. The ministry has also emphasized the importance of increasing awareness among students and parents about the use of millets, as well as highlighting the significant role millets play in ensuring food security and nutrition. Promoting millets as a dietary staple aligns with India’s objective of addressing malnutrition and promoting healthy eating habits.

Millets offer numerous health benefits, such as improved digestion, reduced risk of diabetes and heart diseases, and enhanced overall well-being. By incorporating millet-based dishes into school meals and organizing awareness-raising activities, the Ministry of Education hopes to encourage the consumption of these nutritious grains and contribute to a healthier population. It is crucial for all states and union territories to cooperate and promptly provide the requested information to ensure the successful implementation of the millet year initiatives. The collective efforts of educational institutions and government bodies are vital in fostering a positive change in eating habits and promoting the overall well-being of the nation.
