Pope Francis recently stirred controversy as he commented on the Israeli-Palestinian war, leading to criticism from some Jewish groups who interpreted his words as equating Hamas and Israel with “terrorism.”

Pope Francis addressed the ongoing conflict, expressing concern for the suffering on both sides and calling for an end to the violence. However, his use of the term “terrorism” in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict drew swift reactions from certain Jewish organizations.

He met with the Jewish families with relatives held hostage by Hamas, and Palestinians with families still in the Gaza Strip. He told an audience in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican City that he recognized suffering on both sides, saying: “This is what wars do. But here we have gone beyond wars. This is not war. This is terrorism.”

On Monday 20 November, U.S. officials rejected the claims of a genocide committed by Israel. And Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni denied this and said in a statement: “I am not aware that he used such a word.”

The Criticism:

The criticism centers on the perception that the Pope’s words could be construed as an equivalence between the actions of Hamas, the militant group in Gaza, and the state of Israel. Some argue that such framing oversimplifies a complex geopolitical situation and fails to adequately address the nuances of the conflict.

Pope Francis has been an advocate for peace and dialogue between different religious and ethnic groups, and his remarks were likely intended to promote a peaceful resolution to the conflict. However, the sensitive nature of the Israeli-Palestinian issue makes any perceived alignment or comparison between the two parties highly scrutinized.

It remains to be seen how Pope Francis will navigate this controversy. As discussions around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continue, the role of religious leaders in shaping public opinion and fostering understanding will undoubtedly remain a topic of interest and debate.
