In response to security concerns following the recent killing of gangster Sunil Balyan in Delhi’s Tihar jail, the Delhi Prisons Department has decided to transfer 99 officials to different jails in the city. The incident occurred when four inmates allegedly stabbed Balyan to death in the presence of jail staffers. Director General of Prisons, Sanjay Beniwal, has been working with security agencies such as the ITBP, CRPF, and Tamil Nadu Special Force to devise new security arrangements and take disciplinary action against negligent officers.
The transfer of the jail officials aims to improve security measures and prevent malpractices within the prison system. The order specifies the transfer of 11 deputy superintendents, 12 assistant superintendents, 13 head wardens, 57 jail wardens, two head matrons, and four drivers to other jails. Notably, six officials from jails 8 and 9 have already been transferred. Additionally, seven Tamil Nadu SP jail officials from jail 8 have been suspended for their negligence in the incident.The order emphasizes that the officials listed are relieved of their duties immediately, without waiting for formal relieving from their respective jail offices. Non-compliance with the order will be dealt with seriously.
The order has been issued by the jail superintendent 1 of Prison Headquarters with the approval of the DG Prisons.The transfers and disciplinary actions aim to address the lapses in security and deter any collusion between inmates and jail officials. The Delhi Prisons Department is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the prison system and will continue to take necessary measures to achieve this goal.
