During his three-day visit to Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the issue of attacks on temples in the country. In a joint address with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, PM Modi expressed his concerns and highlighted the activities of separatist elements. He emphasized that such actions and thoughts should not harm the friendly ties between India and Australia. PM Albanese assured PM Modi that strict actions would be taken against elements responsible for these attacks in the future.
Recent incidents of Khalistani extremism and clashes between Khalistani activists and pro-India demonstrators have come to light in various parts of Australia. Incidents such as burning Indian flags and the vandalism of a Hindu temple have raised alarm. PM Albanese, during his visit to India in March, had already stated that Australia would not tolerate extreme actions and attacks on religious buildings, including Hindu temples.
Responding to the media, Albanese reiterated his assurance to PM Modi, stating that Australia is a country that respects people’s faith and does not tolerate such extreme actions or attacks on religious buildings, regardless of the religion. He pledged to utilize the police and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for these acts face legal consequences. Albania stressed that Australia is a tolerant and multicultural nation where such activities have no place.
Earlier in March, PM Modi had mentioned that the safety and well-being of the Indian community in Australia were a priority for PM Albanese. The recent attacks on temples in Australia had raised concerns in India, and PM Modi had raised these issues with his Australian counterpart. PM Albanese assured PM Modi of his commitment to the safety of the Indian community in Australia.
The incidents of temple vandalism in Australia have been attributed to the global pattern of Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), which aims to create fear and intimidation among Australian Hindus. The attacks, coupled with propaganda, illegal signs, and cyberbullying, are part of SFJ’s strategy. Incidents such as the vandalization of the Shree Laxmi Narayan Temple in Brisbane, anti-Hindu graffiti on the Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple in Carrum Downs, and similar actions against the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Mill Park have been reported.
The assurance from Australian PM Albanese and the discussions between the two leaders reflect the commitment to maintaining the safety and well-being of the Indian community in Australia. The issue of attacks on temples and the activities of separatist elements will continue to be addressed by both countries to preserve the strong bilateral relationship.
