History
The Avalanche were founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques. They were a successful team in the World Hockey Association (WHA), winning two Avco Cups in 1977 and 1978. However, the WHA folded in 1979, and the Nordiques were one of four teams absorbed into the NHL.
The Nordiques struggled in their early years in the NHL. However, they made a run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1985, losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in five games.
