In a shocking turn of events, Pakistan has been engulfed in violence and riots following the arrest of its former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, and his close aide, ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi. Asad Umar, the PTI’s secretary-general, was also detained, while efforts were underway to arrest senior PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry.
The arrests of prominent PTI figures were carried out to maintain law and order, according to sources. However, these actions further fueled public outrage, resulting in widespread protests, clashes, and riots across the country. Supporters of Imran Khan took to the streets, storming police stations and clashing with security forces in a display of discontent. Tragically, the violent confrontations have already led to at least four reported deaths.
In a separate case known as the ‘Toshakhana’ corruption case, Imran Khan faced indictment shortly before his arrest. The case revolves around allegations of illegally selling state gifts received during his tenure as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022. These gifts, stored in the national treasury, were intended for officials, parliamentarians, and heads of state.
