Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to participate in the Group of Seven (G7) summit, which will be hosted by Japan in Hiroshima from May 19 to May 21. Prime Minister Modi’s visit comes in response to an invitation extended by his Japanese counterpart, Fumio Kishida. As India holds the G20 presidency this year, PM Modi considers his presence at the G7 summit to be particularly meaningful. He expressed his eagerness to engage in discussions with the G7 countries and other invited partners on the world’s challenges and the necessity of collective action.

During the summit, Prime Minister Modi will deliver a speech highlighting global issues, including food security, fertilizers, and energy security. He is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders in attendance. The G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.

The G7 summit’s broad agenda encompasses various critical topics such as nuclear disarmament, economic resilience, economic security, regional issues, climate change, energy security, and food and health. India is expected to participate in two formal sessions, focusing on subjects such as food, development, health, gender equality, climate, energy, environment, and the overarching theme of achieving a peaceful, stable, and prosperous world.

Notably, ahead of the summit, both the United States and the United Kingdom have announced their intention to impose sanctions on Russia due to its ongoing strikes in neighboring Ukraine. The Ukraine conflict, now in its second year, is expected to feature prominently in the discussions among G7 leaders. The US and its allies, including the UK and the EU, have been implementing sanctions against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in February of the previous year. These measures have targeted Russian President Vladimir Putin, the financial sector, and prominent oligarchs.

Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the G7 summit underscores India’s growing prominence on the global stage and its commitment to addressing pressing global challenges. The summit provides an opportunity for India to engage with influential world leaders and contribute to discussions on key issues affecting nations worldwide. As India assumes the G20 presidency this year, its participation in the G7 summit further amplifies its role in shaping global agendas and fostering international cooperation.
