The victim, a resident of Lakhimpur, is pursuing her first year of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) studies in a college and was living in a private hostel. On Wednesday, her relatives arrived at the hostel and a dispute erupted between them. The argument escalated to the point where the student was physically attacked due to her pregnancy. In the midst of the altercation, she ran to the rooftop of the third floor and took the drastic step of jumping off.
The relatives and the police rushed the injured student to a nearby hospital before transferring her to a trauma center. Although she was caught once, she managed to jump again. Meanwhile, one of her friends, who hails from Muradabad, was also present at the scene on Wednesday afternoon. The police interrogated him, and he revealed that the student had been assaulted by her family members. He further informed them that during her first attempt to leave the premises, she was apprehended but managed to escape during the second incident.
The police extensively questioned the friend for several hours, but he denied any involvement or knowledge of the incident. However, the investigation has not uncovered any evidence supporting his claims. The authorities are exploring all possible angles to ascertain the circumstances that led to the assault and the subsequent suicide attempts.
The revelation of the student’s pregnancy had apparently enraged her family members, which was the primary reason behind their aggressive behavior.
