There is currently a Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise (TROPEX) taking place in the Indian Ocean Region for the 2023 edition of the Indian Navy’s major maritime exercise Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise (TROPEX). This operational level exercise takes place biennially and is carried out by all Indian Navy units as well as Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Coast Guard assets, with its first maritime surveillance exercise taking place in January 2019. It is also called the biggest war game of the Indian Navy.

It is scheduled that Tropex 23 will be conducted for a period of three months from January 23rd to March 23rd and all surface combatants of the Indian Navy including destroyers, frigates, corvettes, submarines, and aircraft will be deployed on complex maritime operational deployments during the duration of the exercise. As part of a Navy Concept of Operations, operational logistics and interoperability with other Services are validated and refined as part of this exercise.

This exercise is being conducted in multiple phases, both in the harbour and at sea, covering multiple facets of combat operations, including live weapon firings, as well as a number of different combat operations. During this exercise, the Indian Navy fleets will be tested on their readiness to operate in a multi-threat environment in order to determine their combat readiness.

Additionally, the maritime exercise will provide an opportunity for operational interaction between the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force, and the Coast Guard at the operational level which will further strengthen interoperability and many joint operations in a more complex environment.
