In a significant move, US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has introduced legislation aimed at declassifying government records pertaining to unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and anomalous phenomena. Schumer’s proposed amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) seeks to establish a commission responsible for reviewing classified information and subsequently declassifying relevant documents. Drawing inspiration from the JFK Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, Schumer took to Twitter to announce his plan, stating, “I’m introducing new legislation to declassify government records related to unidentified anomalous phenomena and UFOs as an amendment to the NDAA.”

This act, which led to the release of sealed US government records on the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, serves as a model for Schumer’s current initiative. Under the proposed legislation, a nine-person review board would be established, subject to approval by the US Senate. This board would be tasked with examining classified information related to UFOs. Additionally, the US president would be granted the authority to delay the declassification of documents in the event of national security concerns. This legislation aims to provide a systematic and transparent process for declassifying and releasing such materials.

The move by Schumer has garnered support from senators on both sides of the political spectrum. Republican Senators Marco Rubio and Mike Rounds have expressed their backing for the initiative, recognizing the importance of shedding light on the subject. House Republican Tim Burchett went a step further, stating, “The government has been covering this [UFOs] up since the ’40s. I think the American people can handle it.”Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Twitter, also welcomed the legislation on the social media platform, simply responding with “Cool” to Schumer’s tweet.

This indicates the growing interest and intrigue surrounding the topic of UFOs and the potential for groundbreaking discoveries. Furthermore, the House Oversight Committee has announced plans to hold a hearing on UFOs, highlighting the increased attention and scrutiny this subject is receiving from lawmakers. With Schumer’s proposed legislation and the upcoming hearing, it appears that the United States is taking a proactive approach to addressing the public’s curiosity regarding UFOs by seeking to declassify and disclose relevant government records.
