Woman Drowns in Bengaluru Underpass as Car Gets Submerged in Heavy Rainfall

A tragic incident occurred in Bengaluru as a 23-year-old woman, identified as Banurekha, drowned when the car she was traveling in with her family became stuck in neck-deep water at the KR Circle underpass. The victim, an employee at Infosys, was on a sightseeing tour of the city with her family who had come from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.

While Banurekha’s family members were successfully rescued by personnel from the fire department, their attempts to save her were in vain. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who visited the site of the incident, announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the deceased woman’s family. He revealed that the family had hired a car to explore Bengaluru and blamed the driver for taking the risk of crossing the underpass after the barricade had fallen due to the downpour.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the car driver attempted to drive through the water but ended up submerging the vehicle. As heavy rainfall and hailstorm persisted, the water level rose, causing panic among the trapped family. Nearby individuals rushed to their aid, throwing sarees and ropes to help them stay afloat. Despite their efforts to climb up, they were unsuccessful. Emergency service personnel and swimmers managed to rescue two of the trapped individuals, while others were brought out using a ladder.

The survivors were immediately taken to the hospital, where the devastating news of Banurekha’s demise was delivered. The sight of their lifeless family member led to loud mourning and grief among the survivors.

Bengaluru experienced heavy rainfall on that fateful day, resulting in severe waterlogging and disruption of normal activities across different parts of the city. This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers posed by such extreme weather conditions and the importance of taking necessary precautions to ensure safety during such situations.
