The Central Water Commission (CWC) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee have announced plans to establish an International Centre of Excellence for Dams in Roorkee. The center will be a first-of-its-kind facility in India and will focus on promoting best practices and innovation in dam safety and management.

The International Centre of Excellence for Dams will be developed by the CWC and IIT Roorkee as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two organizations. The center will provide a platform for experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from India and around the world to exchange ideas, collaborate, and learn about the latest trends in dam safety and management.

The center will offer various courses and training programs to dam engineers, managers, and other professionals to improve their knowledge and skills in dam safety and management. It will also conduct research on various aspects of dam safety, including geotechnical investigations, instrumentation, and monitoring, seismic safety, and climate change.

In addition, the International Centre of Excellence for Dams will focus on promoting sustainable and environmentally-friendly approaches to dam management. The center will also develop innovative and cost-effective solutions to address the challenges of dam safety and management in India and around the world.

The establishment of the center is expected to have a significant impact on the development of dam safety and management in India and globally. The CWC and IIT Roorkee hope that the center will serve as a hub for the exchange of knowledge and ideas among experts and stakeholders, leading to the development of innovative and effective solutions to address the challenges of dam safety and management.

The MoU between CWC and IIT Roorkee is part of a broader initiative by the Indian government to enhance the safety and management of dams in the country. The government has identified the need for innovative and sustainable solutions to address the growing challenges of dam safety and management in the face of climate change and increasing demand for water resources.
