Fresh Violence Erupts in Manipur’s Imphal East District, Army Deployed

Fresh tensions flared up in Manipur’s capital city of Imphal on Monday as a mob set several homes ablaze in the Imphal East district. In response to the escalating situation, the Army and paramilitary forces were swiftly deployed to regain control, according to officials.

The state government, in light of the recent arson, has reinforced the curfew measures. Previously relaxed from 6 am to 4 pm, the curfew has now been tightened to begin at 2 pm. This move aims to restore peace and stability in the region.

Just earlier this month, violent clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities resulted in a tragic toll of at least 70 deaths, over 200 injuries, and the displacement of thousands. Since then, a tense calm has gripped the state, with internet services still disconnected and a heavy presence of security forces stationed on the ground.

Reports indicate that the disturbance on Monday originated around 10.30 am in the New Checkon Bazaar area of Imphal East district. What began as a ruckus swiftly escalated into violent clashes, culminating in the torching of houses by an enraged mob. Authorities have confirmed the arrest of three individuals believed to be involved in the incident.

In a precautionary measure, the ban on internet services has been extended for an additional five days. The decision was made due to ongoing reports of “incidents like arson of houses and premises.” The Manipur government’s Home department, in its order, expressed concerns over the potential misuse of social media platforms by anti-social elements to disseminate inflammatory images, hate speech, and incendiary video messages. Authorities fear that such actions could further exacerbate the volatile law-and-order situation in Manipur.

With the deployment of the Army and paramilitary forces, the government aims to restore peace and ensure the safety of the citizens. Efforts are underway to quell the violence, bring the situation under control, and prevent any further escalation of communal tensions.
