Kolkata Police has successfully apprehended a man involved in the abduction of a 10-month-old infant from a wedding ceremony in the city. The accused, identified as 30-year-old Bikram Roy, was taken into custody from Danapur in Bihar’s Patna district. Acting swiftly, a team of officers from the anti-rowdy section of Kolkata Police’s detective department and Kalighat police station tracked down Bikram Roy to his relative’s residence in Danapur on May 28. After committing the crime, the accused had sought refuge there.

Bikram Roy originally hails from Hanskhalipur in West Bengal’s Howrah district. Following his arrest, he was presented before a court in Danapur, where transit remand was granted until May 31, according to a Kolkata Police official.

The incident occurred on Sunday, May 28, during a wedding ceremony at Bharat Sevashram Sangh in Kalighat. The couple attending the wedding, Subhash Sahu and Khushboo Devi, entrusted their crying infant to an unknown man who had offered to hold the baby for a while. However, at around 4:30 pm, Khushboo Devi realized that the man had disappeared along with their child. Despite searching for the infant for two hours, the couple couldn’t locate their baby and subsequently reported the incident to Kalighat police station.

The authorities swiftly launched a search operation, scrutinizing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses. Analysis of the CCTV recordings revealed that the abductor had taken the child in a rickshaw to Rashbehari crossing in Kolkata, then utilized various modes of public transportation to reach Andul, with the assistance of another individual.

Kolkata Police, aided by Howrah Government Railway Police and Howrah Police Commissionerate, diligently tracked the abductor’s movements. Eventually, the police received information from a family residing in Sankrail that they had spotted the abducted baby. Acting upon the tip-off, the Kolkata Police team swiftly located the infant and joyously reunited the child with the relieved parents on May 29.

Meanwhile, the investigation continued to apprehend the abductor and any accomplices involved. Manoj Shaw, residing in the vicinity of the victim’s family, was subsequently arrested after it was discovered that he had arranged for the abduction at the request of another family in the locality. Further interrogation of Shaw led the police to Bikram Roy, the alleged kidnapper, resulting in his arrest in Danapur.

A Kolkata Police official revealed that the abductor had received a significant sum of money for carrying out the abduction on behalf of a family who desired to adopt a baby boy. The authorities are currently pursuing the absconding family members and are confident of apprehending them soon.
